Home > English Courses > Levels Levels Elementary (90 hours) Students have very little knowledge of English. They can read elementary texts but can neither express themselves nor maintain an elementary conversation. By the end of this course they are able to understand simple English sentences and can make themselves understood in certain basic situations. Pre-Intermediate (90 hours) Students have a basic knowledge of elementary grammatical structures. They are able to maintain a simple conversation, speaking slowly and using a limited vocabulary. They can express opinions, as well as transmitting and asking for information. Intermediate (90 hours) Students have a good knowledge of the basic grammatical structures and regular functional vocabulary. They can express themselves quite well and maintain a relatively normal conversation. A lot of practice is needed to develop accuracy and fluency. They understand the basic gist of fluent native speech but still have difficulty understanding colloquialisms. Upper Intermediate (90 hours) Students should have a reasonably sound knowledge of the tenses and main grammatical structures, but still need a lot of practice in accuracy and fluency as well as with phrasal verbs and colloquialisms. They are able to express relatively complex ideas and maintain a fairly normal conversation. They have a reasonable gist understanding of fluent native speech. First Certificate (90 hours) Students have a sound knowledge of tenses and structures and a wide vocabulary. They can express themselves reasonably correctly and understand the broad gist of native level texts, conversations and films. Recommended exam: FCE (University of Cambridge) Advanced (90-180 hours) Students can communicate with ease and are able to express themselves in a wide variety of topics. They are able to maintain professional telephone conversations and participate actively in discussions, as well as understanding English texts and films. Recommended exam: CAE (University of Cambridge) Proficiency (90-180 hours) Students understand fluent native conversation in a range of accents and are able to communicate with ease using a wide colloquial vocabulary. They have an advanced written level. They can understand radio, television and songs. Recommended exam: CPE (University of Cambridge) Our levels correspond to:
